About the film
Released last year, this new Canadian feature film is based on the true story of the youth of Kugluktuk, Nunavut, where the power of the sport of lacrosse, family, tradition and community transformed their town struggling with suicide into a model of hope and youth-led resilience.
The film has been met with praise from both international and Canadian critics: The Grizzlies “Icy setting invigorates a warmhearted winner,” says The Hollywood Reporter. “It's a movie that tells its story with authenticity and heart, and that makes all the difference. It scores,” according to Now Toronto.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the film’s director Miranda de Pencier, and actors Emerald MacDonald and Anna Lambe. The discussion is moderated by former NRK Sápmi journalist Magne Ove Varsi, an expert on Indigenous and Sámi affairs.
The casting of locals has been important to de Pencier - some of the young actors have lived through the struggles reflected in the film. Both actors MacDonald and Lambe are from Nunavut, and this is their very first film.

Canadas ambassade og Cinemateket har gleden av å invitere til filmvisning av engasjerende og hjertevarme The Grizzlies. Spillefilmen forteller den sanne historien om hvordan ballspillet lacrosse endret livene til en gjeng tenåringer – og et helt urfolkssamfunn – i Nord-Canada.
Du får også møte regissør Miranda de Pencier og to av hovedrolleinnhaverne i filmen, Emerald MacDonald og Anna Lambe, i en paneldiskusjon som ledes av urfolksekspert og tidligere NRK Sápmi-profil, Magne Ove Varsi.
Det har vært viktig for de Pencier å bruke lokale skuespillere. MacDonald og Lambe er begge fra Nunavut – det kanadiske territoriet hvor historien finner sted, og dette er deres aller første filmroller.
Om filmen
Det lille inuittsamfunnet Kugluktuk i det kanadiske territoriet Nunavut har i flere tiår slitt med store sosiale problemer som selvmord. Dette ønsker en av lærerne på den lokale ungdomsskolen å gjøre noe med – og starter derfor lacrosse-laget The Grizzlies.
Spillefilmen forteller den utrolige historien om hvordan idretten endret et helt samfunn, og hvordan de klarte å få bukt med selvmord blant ungdom.
